Maine police benefit from sale of forfeited homeMaine Police agencies are sharing the proceeds from the sale of the home of a convicted drug dealer.
A home owned by Joel Keene, who is serving a 5 1/2-year sentence for possession with intent to distribute marijuana and cocaine, was sold in May for $225,000.
The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency got the largest share, $83,363, or 40 percent of the $208,409 net sales amount, said John Cooper, chief deputy for the U.S. Marshal's Office in Portland, Maine.
The Maine State Police, the Norway Police Department and sheriff's departments for Oxford and Somerset counties each got around $21,000, or 10 percent of the proceeds, he said.
The amounts were based on the extent to which the agencies participated in the investigation.
A U.S. District Court jury ruled that Keene's home and 79 acres of land were subject to forfeiture because they were used to store large quantities of marijuana and cocaine, said Gerry Baril, a supervisor and special agent with the Maine DEA.
Baril said the homes of drug dealers are seized when the amount of drugs taken in a case are consistent with the value of the home.
The Maine law enforcement agencies that received the money participated in a Sept. 29, 2000, raid of Keene's property. Police seized around 70 pounds of marijuana and several pounds of cocaine found in Keene's garage.
